Dissidia Final Fantasy NT: A nice but weird change

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. What can I say? Dissidia is probably number one on my list when it comes to fighting games so as soon as this version was announced for the PS4, you know I had to jump on it immediately. And all I can say is that this does a really good job holding up to the first two games but feels weird in a few other ways as well.

As I actually chose not to participate in the open Beta a few weeks ago and stayed away from the side of the web that talked about the game, I was expecting to see a beautifully crafted story that acts on the story of the originals while adding in a few new mechanics to make the game feel fresh and alive as I leveled up my favorite characters and gave them the best move set I could think of. But what I got was completely different. Gone was the emphasis on the story mode and instead we're given a focus on the online aspect of the game, which I could understand as it's coming into the e-sports realm of fighting games. And sure while the story mode was still there, it's more along the lines of an interactive story rather than a free roaming world. You unlock special items the more you battle online and use those to unlock cut-scenes and certain battles. Which I can deal with.

But what about the gameplay? Has that changed drastically? The answer would be yes and no. While the gameplay at it's core still has that same Dissidia feel, it adds in a few new mechanics to change things up a bit. It's no longer just a 1v1 battle anymore, now the arena has expanded to make fights a 3v3 scenario and this was actually the kind of change I was looking for. It adds a new element because you can no longer focus on just one enemy, you have to manage your time and focus to three enemies all while trying to avoid their Bravery and HP attacks. Battles now don't end when you die, they end when your team gains three deaths, meaning if you die in combat and your team has suffered less than 3 deaths you can actually jump back into combat. And I'm just going to let you know, it feels amazing to score that last kill as the match goes back for a slow-mo of the victim and the attacker

And because character customization has actually been removed, most likely for balancing reasons. All customization options were limited to aesthetic. Which is understandable, as stated before this has an emphasis on e-sports. But it did throw me off when I realized that I actually couldn't change the characters' bravery attacks and that their HP attacks were limited to only one that is both used in aerial and ground combat. As well as the dodging mechanic which no longer makes things extremely easy to dodge. While all of these changes seem really small, they actually change the game in so many ways.

This is a nice change from the Original Dissidia as well as Duodecim. However, as weird as the changes feel, it's good to see that Square-Enix is trying out something new with this game series. Will I keep playing? Most likely. And if you actually haven't tried a Dissidia game this might actually be a good way to try it out as there is no longer a need to spend hours grinding to get a character set that works for you.
